Judo. I had wanted to try it for a long time, starting with the year I took off from fencing back in the mid-90's. Last spring, I thought about starting when we were living in Dover and moving to Seabrook, and I found a club in Portsmouth. At about the same time, Brian had decided to start judo again in Derry (he studied it in middle school).
When all hell broke loose this summer and Sam and I were compelled to move in with her parents (I know it's for the best...there's a house at the end of all of this), I let the whole thing fall by the wayside. But in late July, Brian invited Emily and I to come watch a class. I really liked the teaching style and the atmosphere of the club, particularly the old guy who founded the club. His intensity and insight into the art and simplicity of judo echoed much of what I thought about fencing. It also reinforced what a good instructor I am.
So, I signed up, it's cheap, and started last Wednesday. Mostly, I spent my time learning how to land (backfalls) and learning basic grips. Even with working out every morning with a half hour swim followed by 1.5 hours of weight lifting, I haven't had a workout like that in a long time. I was sweating like the proverbial pig and my hands and arms ached as if I'd never used them before. In truth, I hadn't, not that way and when you combined that with the precision strength work that I had endured at my guitar lesson the night before, I was amazed that I could feel my fingers.
I skipped Monday, for two reasons. One, I hadn't seen Sam in a few days and two, I was coming down with a nice chest and head cold. Today, though, wild horses couldn't keep me away. And if they try, I'll pin them to the ground. |

Cool!! I used to do Tae Kwon Do, but I'm signing up for Hap Ki Do now. Maybe someday we could beat each other up :)
I would be most honored to try to pin you. ;)
Hap Ki Do sounds interesting and it sounds like it has a lot in common with judo (except that judo has progressed more towards a sport). Outside of the kicking (I have very strong legs, but they're more suited for holding my ground or getting out of the way than kicking), it's an art I think I might enjoy.
I was considering Uechi-ryu, but the closest dojo is an hour away. There are Goju-ryu and Shorin-ryu dojos nearby, but judo seemed more fun and more my style.
I should post pictures of me in general. The fencing picture doesn't look anything like me. Maybe it's because of the mask. Or maybe because it's not me.
Yeah, pictures! I love pictures! | |
